RICE AND GRAIN MILLING

Recovery routes for rice and grain mill by-products

Verloop routes rice husk, rice bran, broken rice, mill dust, screenings and off-specification or wet grain from UK and European mills into feed, biomass, anaerobic digestion (AD) and soil outlets. Material that qualifies stays in the feed chain under our Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops (TASCC) and Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS) assurance. Every load is evidenced in Verloop Vision, Verloop's own traceability platform, from mill gate to destination.

How Verloop Vision works

What we take, and where it goes

  • Rice bran: animal feed, or oil extraction where volumes allow
  • Broken rice: animal feed and pet food ingredients
  • Rice husk: biomass fuel, animal bedding or soil improvement
  • Screenings and mill dust: feed where it qualifies, otherwise AD
  • Off-spec, infested or wet grain: feed where drying and testing show it is safe, otherwise AD or other permitted recovery
  • Damaged import consignments: assessed at the port or store and routed by condition

Why mills use Verloop

  • Feed-chain assurance in place: TASCC, UFAS and registration under Regulation 183/2005
  • More than one outlet considered for every stream, so collections continue when one outlet's capacity or specification changes
  • Collections and haulage arranged by Verloop around your production schedule
  • Evidence packs for your customers, auditors and sustainability reporting

Feed safety and assurance on every load are overseen by Julie Green, Verloop's Technical Manager, who has more than 30 years in food and pet food technical roles.

Frequently asked questions

What can rice husk be used for?

Rice husk can be used as a biomass fuel, as animal bedding, and as a soil improver or growing-media ingredient. Verloop matches husk to the outlet that suits its volume, moisture and location.

Can broken rice go into animal feed in the UK?

Yes. Broken rice is a recognised animal feed material in the UK. Verloop supplies it through assured feed-chain routes under TASCC and UFAS, which most feed buyers require.

What happens to grain that has been damaged by water or heat?

Verloop assesses damaged grain for moisture, heating, mould and contamination. Where drying and testing show it is safe, it can go to feed. Grain that has touched floodwater, or fails testing, goes to AD or another permitted recovery route. Verloop records the decision and the destination.

Do you collect from ports as well as mills?

Yes. Verloop recovers damaged and rejected grain and rice consignments from ports, terminals and bulk stores, as well as by-products from mills.

What paperwork do we receive?

Verloop provides chain of custody, weighbridge records, feed-chain documentation where relevant, and confirmed destination for every load.
