OILSEED CRUSHING AND EDIBLE OIL REFINING

By-product recovery for oilseed crushers and edible oil refiners

Verloop recovers soapstock, acid oil, spent bleaching earth and oily residues from oilseed crushing and edible oil refining. We route them into ISCC-certified biofuel and oleochemical routes and permitted anaerobic digestion (AD) outlets across the UK and Europe. Every load carries International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) chain of custody where required and is recorded in Verloop Vision, Verloop's own traceability platform, so the certified origin of the material is proven, not assumed.

How Verloop Vision works

Materials we recover

  • Soapstock. We arrange for the residual oil to be split from the water through approved processing partners, place the recovered oil into biofuel and oleochemical markets, and send the water to a permitted treatment route.
  • Acid oil. Placed into biodiesel, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and oleochemical feedstock markets with certified chain of custody.
  • Spent bleaching earth. Oil-laden filter cake routed into AD, where its residual oil becomes energy.
  • Filter cakes, gums and tank bottoms. Assessed case by case and placed into the best permitted outlet.
  • Off-specification (off-spec) and thick loads. The difficult batches other outlets reject, placed into European routes that can take them.

How it works in practice

For a major UK oilseed refiner, Verloop collects soapstock, has the oil split from the water by an approved processing partner, and routes the oil into European outlets, including the thick and off-spec loads others struggle to place. Every movement is recorded in Verloop Vision.

Why refiners use Verloop

  • One accountable partner for several difficult streams, rather than a different contractor for each
  • ISCC and ISO 9001 certified, a Sedex member, with Environment Agency carrier, broker and dealer registration
  • Certified-origin evidence, which matters more each year as biofuel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) buyers pay for proven traceability
  • Routes across the UK and Europe, with feedstock partners in Malaysia

Verloop's ISCC chain of custody is overseen by Julie Green, Technical Manager, with more than 30 years' technical experience in food and pet food.

Frequently asked questions

What is soapstock and what can it be used for?

Soapstock is a by-product of chemically refining edible oils, made up of fatty acid soaps, oil and water. Once the oil is recovered it can be used as a feedstock for biodiesel, HVO and oleochemicals. Verloop recovers the oil and routes both the oil and the water compliantly.

How can refiners dispose of spent bleaching earth without landfill?

Spent bleaching earth still holds residual oil, which makes it a useful feedstock for anaerobic digestion (AD). Verloop routes it into AD plants in the UK and Europe as a permitted recovery route, with full traceability, rather than sending it to landfill.

Is acid oil an eligible feedstock for biofuels?

Acid oil can be used for biodiesel and HVO production. Its eligibility under specific schemes depends on certification and classification, which is why Verloop moves it under ISCC chain of custody.

Can Verloop take material from refineries outside the UK?

Yes. Verloop runs routes for refinery by-products across the UK and Europe, and works with feedstock partners in Malaysia.
